Walking routes from Rakovac

Every route here starts at Rakovac Monastery in Stari Rakovac, where you can park and where city bus 77 stops. They are listed from shortest to longest.

Trails on Fruška Gora are marked with painted signs on trees and poles. The distances and climbs below come from published hiking reports. We will replace them with our own GPS measurements once we have walked each route with a camera.

1. Monastery – Beli Majdan

Distance about 600 m one way Walking time 10 min Difficulty easy

The shortest walk, and fine with children. From the monastery follow the “Beli Majdan” sign up a steep earth track to the old quarry hall (entry into the gallery only with a park ranger). Climb the rock-cut steps above the hall for a view over the treetops. More about Beli Majdan.

2. Hermitage loop

Distance about 8 km, circular Difficulty moderate

Monastery – Hermitage of Isaija Parivodski – viewpoint – Plana – Izvidnica – Beli Majdan – Monastery. Almost the entire loop runs through forest. The hermitage is the highlight: a monk’s cell cut into a limestone cliff. More about the hermitage.

3. Dumbovac waterfall

Distance about 3 km one way Walking time about 1 h one way ↑ about 150 m Difficulty moderate

Walk up the asphalt road past the monastery. After about 600 m a marked path turns off towards the waterfall. Return the same way.

Experienced walkers can continue west to the Šakotinac waterfall and come down to the village of Gornji Šakotinac, about 10 km and 3 hours in total. It ends far from Rakovac, so arrange a lift or a taxi back. More about the waterfall.

4. Gradac peaks and Zmajevac

Distance about 15 km, circular ↑ about 500 m in total Difficulty hard

Monastery – Beli Majdan – Hermitage – the old Rakovac quarry – Mali and Veliki Gradac (470 m) – Zmajevac – back down to the monastery. From Beli Majdan the path to Gradac follows the blue markings and climbs steadily. At Zmajevac, the former mountaineers’ hut is now a restaurant, a good place for a break.

Getting to the start by bus

City and suburban buses of GSP Novi Sad serve Rakovac:

  • Line 77 (towards Stari Rakovac) stops right by the monastery.
  • Line 78 (towards Beočin Selo) stops in Novi Rakovac at the traffic lights at the main crossroads. From there it is about 3 km on foot, south along the asphalt road, to the monastery.

In Novi Sad both lines stop on Bulevar oslobođenja. Check current times with GSP Novi Sad before you travel.
