Beli Majdan: a cave made by people

10 minutes from the monastery, easy. The best first walk. A short, steep earth track leads from the monastery to a huge hall in the rock, held up by stone pillars. Look for the marks of the stone cutters’ tools on the walls, and climb the steps above the hall for a view over the forest. Stay at the entrance, though: going inside is only allowed with a national park ranger, because stones can fall.

A legend says a cave-man called Veliki Sremac Baća lives deep inside. Nobody has ever photographed him. Maybe you will be the first?

Beli Majdan: how to get there

The waterfall: for good walkers (8 years and up)

About 1 hour each way. The path to the Dumbovac waterfall climbs through the forest. In early spring the ground is covered with snowdrops and wild hyacinths. The last part down to the water is slippery, so hold hands.

What to look for in the forest

• Roe deer. They are shy; walk quietly in the early morning.
• Birds. More than 200 kinds of birds live on Fruška Gora, including the rare eastern imperial eagle.
• Tool marks on the walls of Beli Majdan.
• The monastery bell tower, visible through the trees from the path.
